Seasonal flowers for Atlanta events

Seasonal flowers look better, last longer, and cost less. A month-by-month guide to what's available in Atlanta for your next event.

Why seasonal flowers make the difference

Seasonal flowers look better, last longer, and cost less. That's the whole argument.

A peony in May is lush, fragrant, and affordable. A peony in November is imported from South America, costs three times as much, and arrives already bruised from the journey. The flower is the same, but the experience isn't.

Atlanta sits in USDA Hardiness Zone 7b/8a, which means a long growing season and a wide range of locally available blooms March through November. That's a real advantage for event planning. Whether you're hosting a gala in Sandy Springs, a wedding in Roswell, or a corporate dinner in Marietta, seasonal sourcing gives you better flowers for your budget.

What's in season, month by month

January

The quietest month for local blooms. Rely on imported flowers and preserved greenery. Amaryllis, anemones, paperwhites, ranunculus (imported), and evergreen branches carry winter events well. White and green palettes feel natural this time of year.

February

Still limited locally, but early spring starts to hint. Hellebores (Lenten roses) begin blooming in Atlanta gardens. Tulips become available through growers. Anemones are at their peak for imports. Valentine's events lean on roses, but ranunculus offers a more interesting alternative at a similar price point.

March

The season turns. Daffodils, early tulips, and flowering quince branches become available locally. Cherry blossoms and dogwood branches add drama to installations. This is when Atlanta's floral options start expanding fast.

April

Peak wedding season opens. Peonies start arriving (usually late April). Ranunculus, sweet peas, garden roses, and snapdragons are abundant. Lilac branches offer fragrance and color. Alpharetta and north metro Atlanta gardens are in full bloom.

May

The best month for variety. Peonies are at their peak. Add hydrangeas, stock, delphinium, and foxglove. Soft pastels and bold pinks and purples are all available. Local growers have their widest selection, and pricing reflects the abundance.

June

Summer heat arrives, and flower selection shifts. Dahlias begin their long season. Garden roses hold up well. Lisianthus offers a peony-like look that handles warmth better. Sunflowers start appearing. For outdoor events, choose heat-tolerant varieties and keep arrangements hydrated.

July and August

Atlanta's hottest months demand durable flowers. Zinnias, dahlias, celosia, and protea handle the heat. Tropical options (orchids, anthuriums, birds of paradise) thrive in summer humidity. Hydrangeas are available but wilt fast without water tubes. Keep outdoor arrangements in shade until the last possible moment.

September

The transition month. Summer flowers (dahlias, zinnias) are still going strong, and early fall varieties start arriving. Chrysanthemums, marigolds, and ornamental grasses bring autumn texture. The color palette shifts toward warm tones: burgundy, copper, amber, rust.

October

Peak fall event season. Dahlias are at their most spectacular (particularly dinner-plate varieties). Add branches with turning leaves, persimmon, pomegranates, and dried elements like preserved fall foliage. This is Atlanta's second busiest wedding month after May.

November

The last of the fall blooms. Chrysanthemums carry through mid-month. Berries (viburnum, privet, hypericum) add texture and color. Evergreen starts becoming available for holiday events. Dried and preserved flowers extend arrangements when fresh options thin out.

December

Holiday gala season. Evergreen, holly, magnolia leaves, red berries, and white roses are the classics. Amaryllis returns. For events that want to avoid the expected red-and-green palette, white amaryllis with silver-dollar eucalyptus and white candles creates a sophisticated winter look.

Working with seasonal availability for your event date

The best approach is flexibility. Fall in love with a look, not a specific flower.

If you want the soft, ruffled look of peonies but your event is in August, lisianthus and garden roses can create a similar effect. If you want dramatic burgundy for a March event, hellebores and imported ranunculus get you there without fighting the calendar.

A few practical tips:

  • Tell your floral designer your event date first, then talk about preferences. A good designer will steer you toward what's available and beautiful for your timing.
  • Local growers in Roswell, Marietta, and north Georgia often have varieties that commercial wholesalers don't carry. Ask your designer about farm-sourced options.
  • Build a palette around 2 to 3 anchor flowers that you know are in season, then let your designer fill in with complementary textures and greenery.
  • For destination-imported flowers (orchids year-round, tropical varieties), expect higher costs but consistent availability regardless of season.

"The place looked so stunning. My guests kept telling me how much they were enjoying the food and how beautiful everything looked. Thank you Sandra for your guidance, I cannot say enough. The whole event was truly an exquisite delight!" - Collette T.

What this means for your event

  • Check seasonal availability before falling in love with a specific bloom. Your floral designer can suggest alternatives that capture the same feeling.
  • Current wedding flower trends in Atlanta lean heavily toward seasonal, locally sourced flowers, which works in your favor for both aesthetics and budget.
  • Coordinate your seasonal flower choices with your catering presentation to create a unified seasonal feel across the table.
  • Consider how your seasonal palette affects centerpiece design. Spring pastels call for different vessel and candle choices than fall jewel tones.

Frequently asked questions

Are seasonal flowers significantly cheaper than out-of-season options?

Yes. Seasonal, locally grown flowers can cost 30 to 50 percent less than imported alternatives. The savings come from shorter supply chains and higher availability.

Can my floral designer source flowers from local Atlanta-area farms?

Many floral designers in metro Atlanta (Sandy Springs, Roswell, Alpharetta, and surrounding areas) work directly with Georgia growers. Ask during your initial consultation. Local sourcing also means fresher blooms that last longer through your event.

What if my heart is set on a flower that's out of season?

Your designer can import it, but expect higher prices and less control over quality. A better approach is often to identify what you love about that flower (the shape, the color, the texture) and find an in-season substitute that hits the same notes.

We used them for my sister's wedding last month and I'm so happy we did. The Chef and his wife (Sandy) are the utmost professional and kind. At our tasting they thoughtfully listened to our feedback and answered our questions in order to make our event unique, special and a success. They also curated the menu based off our likes/dislikes and then made adjustments as needed to ensure we had the perfect meal! Often times I've found that catering companies do not always deliver the same caliber of food when making food for larger groups and or weddings; However That's Definitely Not the case with Exquisite Delites, the nailed it from start to finish!!! The setup on the day of the wedding was beautiful and the food was even better than it was at our tasting 10/10! We got so many compliments on the food! I highly recommend Exquisite Delites for any special event in Atlanta (or wherever they serve). We will definitely be using them in the future. Also I want to point out - Sadia was an excellent server, and I love how this is a family owned business yet they nail it when it comes to customer service!
